Understanding the evidence
What research can tell you
Research helps physicians weigh cancer control, side effects and quality of life. Below, the studies in XRO’s collection are explained in everyday language, including what they explored and what their findings cannot tell us about an individual patient.
Many of these papers are historical. Medicines, technology and treatment schedules have changed since they were published.

Research and individual experiences
A study looks for patterns across patients. A case report describes one person’s care and may raise questions for further research, but cannot predict another person’s outcome. XRO’s case collection includes treatment stories and published case reports.

Clinical trials test specific questions about treatment. The papers above describe completed research, not current enrollment opportunities at XRO. Ask your oncologist whether a currently enrolling trial fits your diagnosis, previous treatment and health, and what participation would involve.
Questions for your care team
- Which research is most relevant to my diagnosis?
- What has changed since these historical studies were published?
- How do the possible benefits compare with the risks for me?
- Are there any currently enrolling trials I should consider?
